A few from a rooftop sunset in Baltimore…. they say you’re “not supposed” to center subjects; here we see that two out of three photos have just that- a centered subject. But there’s something about the symmetry of a well-placed, centered subject in my opinion.

Perhaps it’s one of those rules that, knowing I’m breaking it purposefully, can be forgiven. However, I wonder how many hacks out there just tell themselves that very thing all day long. Quite the dilemma! Always observing and self-editing in my photography.

The Hike to the Location-

A week or so ago we lead some great people out onto location via our Meetup Group. Joshua was leading a PhotoHike-Learn to Shoot Moving Water meetup-event, but the fog was heavy and so I lagged behind to get what I knew would be far more interesting to me than some blurry waterfall ;)

(for the record- I love ghostly waters!)

I find the time in between seasons is surreptitiously interesting as far as light and landscape- half dead, half alive; we see this contrast in spring when flowers pop up out of the snow and in the late summer when all the greens start to give way to the autumnal colours. These transition points are fairly difficult to peg and becomes one of those “right place, right time” kind of golden eggs for me. I suppose it’s nature’s version of Androgyny, for lack of a better word; it’s some kind of middle ground- being one of neither but both of each. I like that space.

Up next- my versions of ghost waters.

Part 2 Post from Little Gunpowder Falls…

The goal of the Photo Hike was to shoot moving water. I’ve seen some pretty amazing full-on shots of waterfalls with cryptic fog and ghostly waters; while I admire many of those shots, they’re a bit too literal for me.

So then the challenge becomes- how do I shoot moving water MY way? I sit here trying to find the words to describe what that way is, and am finding it intangible, so I’ll just leave you with the photos.
